The overnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg was a new experience for us. When we got to our cabin, we had no idea what to do. The "hostess", each carriage has one attendant dressed like a air hostess, showed us where to store our suitcases and how to convert the seating into beds. Once we converted the beds we got to sleep. The beds were hard but we both managed some sleep.
We arrived in St. Petersburg at 8 am and was met by our guide and driver. We are enjoying this tour, we only have 3 hours a day with the guide and then the rest of the day to our own.
We did a general city tour, this included The Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, St. Isaac's Cathedral, a couple of bridges,etc.. Even saw a Russian Orthododox service. The city is very European and reminds me a lot of Vienna, in terms of grandeur. I think Peter the Great wanted to make it the Venice of the North with all the canals.
St. Petersburg is almost 60 degrees North in latitude and currently there is very little night, it is called White Night, the local authorities don't even put on the street lights.
We are staying in a lovely hotel in the heart of St. Petersburg, the Petro Palace, so after a freshening up with went for a long walk around the city.
We had dinner at a nice local restaurant, although not overly warm, there are very few outdoor dining restaurants.
By 10pm, we had had enough and were ready for bed, only if it wasn't so light outside!
Cheers,
A & K.
