We hired a car (Suzuki Alto) today to explore the island of Amorgos. Amorgos is about 50 km long and about 7 km wide, extremely hilly with very few flat areas and only a few navigable ports. From Katapola there is only 1 road out (straight up hill about 6 km), to Chora, roughly in the middle of the island. From Chora you can go left or right both about 25 km to the ends of the island. We went West first then came back through Chora to go East. The day's drive was like going up and Arthur Sear 30 times!Another perfect morning in Katapola.
First stop of the day was at Morous Beach (Apparently a lot of the filming for the movie The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu) was done here). I'm not too sure if I've seen a more picturesque beach. There was a 5 minute walk down to the beach and we had to share it with one other couple (selfish bastards! ). If we weren't doing the whole island today I think we could have spent a good part of the day here.
Next stop was at the Western end of Amorgos, where we spent a quick stop of the "ship wreck" before heading to the island top at Kata Mare beach. Another swim in a very quiet and beautiful sandy beach.
We then drove to the other side of the island, along the narrow winding ridge line they call a major road! We first stopped at Agios Pavlos beach. Just when I thought we had seen every pretty beach going, up pops thus beach. Wow! We couldn't get a car park here (wonder why?) so we didn't stop, a big mistake I think!
Next we drove to Aigiali Bay, then drove up to the village of Tholaria and had a late lunch. Lots of photos before heading back towards Katapola with even more photo stops!
After returning, Kristin went to the local beach while Andy had a nap (the driving was tiring! ).
For dinner we went to the other side of Katapola near the port and this was a better spot than the previous 2 nights. A lot more people watching and the meal was good also.
Another big day, not many left!
Cheers,
A & K
