An early rise and quick breakfast to catch our boat cruise at Mandraki harbour near the Old Town. Our cruise was to take us down the East Coast of Rhodes to the town of Stegna. When we arrived at the harbour, Andy was very concerned with the boat/ferry....it was called "Love Boat"... was this a set-up?
Heading down the coast to Stegna we had two stops. The first was at the Anthony Quin Bay, obviously named after the actor. This bay had beautiful clear turquoise water and the temperature of the water would have been in the mid 20s. The bay is also famous for the setting for the film, "Guns of Navaronne" (or as the Finnish guide translated as, the Cannons of Navaronne, pretty close! ).
The coastline was dotted with beaches, coves and resorts. The second stop was at Tsambika near Kolympia Beach. At these first two stops the boat anchors a couple of hundred metres off shore and you can dive off the edge of the boat and swim and float around for about half an hour. We can tread water easily for half hour now, so we are expecting our "Heralds" when we get home!
The next stop was the lunch stop at Stegna. The meal was included but it was akin to eating at Coles Cafeteria in the 70s. After a stroll along the foreshore of Stegna (not much to see folks) we spent the next 90 minutes in the water.
On the return trip to Rhodes we had a swim about halfway back. A great trip and enjoyable. We then returned to our hotel to freshen up.
The contrast came next.
One of Kristin 's dialysis patients, Zoi, was born on Rhodes. Zoi told Kristin to look up her brother Michael. We made contact and his son Nick, came picked up us at out hotel. Nick could speak very good English, unlike his father who couldn't speak any. So we went to their shop about 10 km away, where they roast and grind coffee and also sell teas, herbs & spices. We stayed for a while, took some photos for Zoi. We thought we were in an authentic Rhodes area, far off the beaten track, when all of a sudden a tourist wagon/train hurtles down the road. I think everywhere in Rhodes is for tourists.
After returning to the hotel, we went for dinner at a restaurant called Niohori. This is family run business and the food was delicious (Trip Advisor didn't let us down again). We made the mistake of having too many appetisers again making it very hard to finish the mains.
