The Old Town is a UNESCO heritage listed walled medieval city.
"The Order of St John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523 and set about transforming the city into a stronghold. It subsequently came under Turkish and Italian rule. With the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, the Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period. In the Lower Town, Gothic architecture coexists with mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period." ( UNESCO)
After the Old Town, which included an obligatory beer stop., we went back to our hotel and swapped shopping for swimming gear and headed to the beach for the afternoon. We once again hired sun lounges and umbrella, and at our sun lounges we had a late lunch and a few drinks. It is a decadent lifestyle but one that we're thoroughly enjoying and becoming accustomed to.
Dinner was at a lovely Greek cafe, George & Maria Falafel Grill restaurant. We had a mix of dips, pita, dolmades and falafel. The meal was delicious. We went for a walk around the "new" town and found some very lively spots. One street was full of bars & strip clubs and was getting ready to take off at about 10 pm, but us oldies were thinking about bed instead!
Cheers,
A & K.
