The tour involved a boat trip on a small ferry (75 minutes) up one of the arms of Sogneford to a pretty little village call Fjaerland. Along the fjord we got to see lots of waterfalls and snow capped hills and some houses lining the shores. On the boat was an Australian couple Debbie and Ross, from Sydney, who we met yesterday on the boat from Flam. So we spent the afternoon chatting about travel etc..
When we arrived at the village of Fjaerland, we went first to the Glacier Museum. Here we watched a short video about the Glacier and there were some interactive exhibits about glaciers.
The glacier is called Jostedalsbreen. This is the largest glacier on mainland Europe, covering an area of 487 square kilometres. It has more than 50 glacier branches and at its thickest it is 600m deep.
5 km down the road is one of the glaciers branches. Here the ice looks blue up high, I hope the photos show this.
We then hopped on the boat and returned to Balestrand and said goodbye to Debbie and Ross who were continuing onto Bergen on the Express Boat. Which is where well be heading tomorrow morning. So an early night for us after dinner.
Cheers,
A & K.
