Krakow: Day 1 & 2

Copenhagen to Krakow involved 2 planes and a stopover in Warsaw. Warsaw airport is named the Fredrick Chopin and the Krakow airport is named Pope John Paul II, much better than Tullamarine and Mascot.

Our apartment in Krakow is fantastic. Having a bit of space makes a difference when travelling for a long time, living out of a suitcase. It is located right on the edge of the Old Town and it takes about 5 (slow walk) minutes to get to the centre.

The first afternoon (Wed) we strolled around and went to St. Mary's  Basilica, beautiful inside,  very ornate and not a spare inch has been spared by the decorators.

There appears to be a church on every 2nd corner in Krakow, but that is balanced out by every other corner having a 24 hour bottle shop.

Kristin then went Amber shopping (Andy was more keen on liquid amber!) in the Cloth Hall (middle of town square), after this Andy needed a drink. After paying $10 for a beer in Scandinavia it was a pleasant surprise to pay about $3.50 for a beer. Krakow is a cheap destination for tourists.

A bit of grocery shopping and a quick rest, we headed out for dinner. Our host at the apartment recommended a place restaurant called Magnes. The food was magnificent. Best meal we have had in weeks( and cheapest).

Thursday was a relative early start, we went on a tour to Auschwitz & Birkenau. A very sombre affair. It is hard to understand the hatred and the inhumanity of it all, and atrocities like this continue to happen (e.g. Pol Pot, Rwanda, etc..).

After we returned from the tour,we went for a bike ride to the Oscar Schindler factory. Here there is a Museum dedicated to the Nazi occupation of Krakow. We spent over 2 hours there and we were rushing through the exhibition. The treatment of the Jews is hard to comprehend. On top of Auschwitz/Birkenau this made today very draining.

On the trip back we stopped in the Jewish Quarter  and had dinner at a Israeli restaurant  called Hamas. The food was Middle Eastern and fantastic. Once again cheap, a few drinks each starter and main only cost about $35.

A quick stop at Magnes for a Mojito for a nightcap, before returning to our apartment.

Salt mines tomorrow.

Cheers

A & K.
