An eclectic day!
In total we have spent a fortnight in Paris (over 3 trips) and today we still found different things to do and re-tweak places we have been to before.
Paris had hosted 2 Olympics (1900 & 1924 - Chariots of Fire), the online research indicates that neither Olympics are celebrated or remembered. Anyhow we decided to go to the outer suburb of Vincennes, the site of the 1900 Olympics. After a couple of Metro trains we got to the stadium, which is now a Velodrome and possibly a rugby stadium. There was no signs/Olympic rings/etc... to indicate this was the Olympic Stadium..sad and hard to understand. The stadium is a part of a large park and lake area bordering the zoo.
Our next stop was to be the Edith Piaf Museum but at the last minute we decided to go to the Pere Lachaise cemetery again (visited it in 2009). We re-visited Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde (didn't have the protective barrier last time) and Frederick Chopin and also seeing Edith Piaf, George Seurat and Maria Callas, amongst others and some impressive memorials. We had lunch in the nearby area of Gambetta.
A shortish walk to the Edith Piaf Museum disappointed, as you need to make an appointment to visit!
Next stop was the Arc de Triomphe. Managed to avoid the Gypsies, although the gold ring trick was tried on me and he looked surprised when I said "piss off dickhead". We climbed the top of the "Arc" and the view of Paris was pretty good...but as good as...
From the "Arc", we walked to the Eiffel Tower via the Trocodero. This time Andy climbed the 700 steps to the be 2nd level with Kristin before getting the lift to the top of the tower. The views from levels 1 & 2 were impressive but from the top fantastic.
After dragging Kristin away from the Eiffel, we ended up back at Notre Dame. A slight diversion to the Ile de St. Louis in search of Mary Verwey's lost earring (sorry sis, no luck) and a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral ( just because you can't see enough churches in Europe!), we had dinner on the Jewish Quarter. The restaurant was called Chez Marianne, which served Middle Eastern food. We had the Degustation menu for 2. We selected 10 items from the menu and the meal was delicious.
Another great day in Paris.
Off to Madrid tomorrow.
Cheers,
A & K.
