We arrived in Denmark and purchased our 72 hour Copenhagen Cards (CPH) (I think after day 1, we are already in front), this included the train trip from the airport.
After settling into our hotel (luckily we could get into our rooms early), which is situated close to the city centre, we went and we ran into the Royal Palace ( just around the corner), called the Christianborg Slott. Here we saw the Royal Chapel (where "our" Mary got married to Prince Frederick), The Royal Residences, the Tower ( good views of Copenhagen), Royal Stables and the Ruins of the Palace from the 13th century. In the same area we saw the Parliament and went into Jewish Museum (got to get value out of the CPH card).
After a quick break and a snack for lunch, (Denmark is slightly cheaper than Norway, the beers are only about $10!), we headed over to the island called Christianshavn. This is supposed to be an alternative/trendy area but we didn't see much of that unfortunately. We did go up the tower at the Christ the Saviour church, which gave great panoramic views of Copenhagen, you could also see Sweden across the Oresund bridge ~8 km long. There are a couple of nice canals here packed with very expensive yachts and launches. We also went into the Maritime Museum (only had 15 minutes before closing, CPH card, before shutting..was good..also had part of a real submarine inside.)
We headed back to the city area and went for a walk along the main pedestrian mall, Frederiksberggade, at the end was a political rally and the Hans Christian Andersen statue.
A short drinks break back at the hotel and then we headed out again.
We caught a bus to the area that contained the Kastellet (an old fortress), the Little Mermaid Statue, the Gefion statute and a park named after Churchill.
We headed to a monument up the road and actually ran into the Amalienborg Palace, then the Marble Church (Frederiks Kirke) and a Russian Orthodox church. I think we will to come back here when everything is open.
We walked to the area called Nyhavn, which has a canal lined with houses very similar to that of old Bergen. We had dinner here and met an Australian couple from Canberra and their 2 year old daughter, who was a busy little thing. We chatted over drinks and dinner and before we knew it was close to 11 pm. So we decided it was time to get home to bed.
2 more full days in Copenhagen and we will try to max out the CPH card! Copenhagen has a similar feel and appearance to Amsterdam.
Cheers,
A & K.
