We finally decided to walk (3 km) to the "new" Jewish Cemetery. This was a mistake, it was closed.
From there we crossed the river Vistula to the old Jewish Ghetto area. We were here the other day when we went to Oscar Schindler's factory/museum but missed a couple of significant sightseeing places. The chair sculptures and Apteka pod Orlem.
The chair sculpture is about the thousands of Jews who were, without notice, told to assemble in the square for deportation to the concentration camps. The Jews collected their belongings and apparently their were told to leave behind the furniture i.e. the chairs.
Apteka pod Orlem, now a museum to the Holocaust, was a chemist shop during Nazi occupation and a significant site of Polish resistance.
After this we walked along the river Vistula (the longest river in Poland) and stopped for a drink and snack at a riverside restaurant/bar boat.
From there we walked through the Jewish Quarter and had some delicious Polish dumplings, Pierogi, there were dozens of different types.
On the way back through the old town, Kristin did a bit more Amber shopping.
It was mid-afternoon and it was time for a siesta.
For dinner we crossed town yet again but our choice Wok, (rated highly on Trip Advisor) wasn't that great. A pity because the meals in Krakow have been excellent and very affordable.
On the way back to the apartment, we dropped into the Church of St. Peter & St. Paul where a concert was being held for choirs. Very nice!
Off to Paris on Sunday.
Cheers,
A & K.
