Amalfi: Day 1 & 2

Thursday 16th July

The train trip from Catania to Salerno was quite long and boring, the only highlight  was the entire train boarding the ferry for the crossing from Sicily to mainland Italy (about a 2 km crossing).

At Salerno we caught the bus to Amalfi. The bus was packed and was very hot. The trip along the coastline is quite an experience. Spectacular views , numerous hairpin bends and some scary manoeuvers from the driver.

Our hotel, the Hotel Fontana is right in the centre of Amalfi opposite the beach and our room has a balcony which looks out to sea. Very nice. Unfortunately it has no wifi, so this blog maybe a few days behind.

After settling in and a couple cooling drinks we had a little work around and came across a restaurant that was giving away free meals, so not being backward we grabbed a dish each which had a selection of different Italian foods. We took this back to our room and ate it on the balcony and watched the busy promenade of Amalfi.

Friday 17th July

After breakfast we caught the bus from Amalfi to Sorrento. This was even more harrowing  than the trip from   Salerno. So much that we decided we weren't  catching the bus back. At Sorrento we did a small walk thriugh the town and headed to the harbour area. The ferry back to Amalfi was still 3 hours away, so we went to the small stretch of beach (black sand and pebbles) and swam and sun-baked with the locals. (The alternative was to hire sunchairs and umbrellas, over €20 each, too expensive  for a couple of hours). The water was clear, very nice, not too cold or warm, just right Goldilocks!

We had a quick late lunch  before boarding the ferry. The ferry first went to the island of Capri, then to Positano and finally Amalfi. A much better way to travel than the bus but about 6 times more expensive.

After a half hour pit stop, we caught a bus to Ravello. A pretty little town about 15 km ftom Amalfi but high in the hills. Another twisty winding bus trip. Worth a visit just for the views alone. When we decided to leave we had to wait well over an hour for a bus to arrive. (It appears one bus just didn't  come as advertised. ..more Italian efficiency).

For dinner we sat at one of the side-walk cafes, overlooking one of the public beaches (which was still packed at 10 pm) . We ate a pizza and sone bruchetta, both very good, washed down with some Tuborg(Danish beer) draft.

Cheers,

A & K
