Last day in Lisbon and it was time for a bit of culture. We hopped on the metro (blue line) to Sao Sebastiao and went to the Gulbenkian Museum. Gulbenkian was a Brit of Armenian descent, who made a lot of money through oil in the Middle East. His collection is considered to be one of world's greatest private collections.
The museum has a collection that ranges from ancient Egypt to late 19th century art. An impressive collection from one individual. Here you can works from Rembrandt, Manet, Monet, Gainsborough, Rodin and many other famous artists.
Next door to the museum in the lovely surrounding gardens is the Museum of Modern Art. We went in and the majority was the works of Charrua. Interesting but I'm not a fan.
From there we caught the Metro to waterfront (Praca do Comercio) amd had a drink in the deckchairs in the sun, overlooking the view of the Tagus River. Very pleasant.
We decided then to do a 2 hour river cruise. The cruise took us over to the South side of the river, then past the Christ Rei monument, under the bridge (the one that looks like the Golden Gate bridge), and down to the Belem Tower, the Discover's monument and then heading back to the start. Always good to be on or near the water and you get a magnificent view of Lisbon.
For dinner, we went to a restaurant called Meson Andaluz, a Spanish/Portuguese place where we sat outside on the steps. A lovely location and meal.
Friday
We left Lisbon and travelled to Rome (we are here for 2 nights). We met up with one of my old friends Peter Wood (who is also married to my cousin Maz) and his son Cormac. We had a few drinks and a meal and talked about our travels. A top evening.
Cheers,
A & K.
